Great Apes

There is four types of great apes--  gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees, and bonobos. The gorillas are African apes.  They are diffrent from monkeys. Gorillas have no tail and long arms, used by some species for swinging. They have shoulder blades at the back (not at the side like most mammals) and also having Y shaped cusps on molar teeth.
There are some famous gorillas: Wombwells gorillas,Colo ,Digit,Koko ,Goma, and Joe. The Wombwell was the first living gorilla to reach Europe in 1855. He only lasted a few months and lived off of a diet including beer and roast beef. The Colo was the first zoo bred gorilla born on 22nd of December 1965 at Columbus Zoo, Ohio.  The Digit was a wild mountain gorilla whose death in 1977 at the hands of poachers spearheaded an international conservation campaign (Dian Fossey). Koko is female gorilla known for mastering American Sign Language. Goma is the first gorilla to be born at a European Zoo in 1959 at Basle, Switzerland. Last, but not least Joe, a silverback male. He was born in Twycross Zoo. He is in his fourth decade.
The Bonobos dwell in the tropical forests of the Congo Basin south of the Congo River. Bonobos are found in only one country: the Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire), a resource-rich region now ravaged by civil war.
Wild Orangutans are located in Indoneisan Borneo, Kalimantan, Sarwak, Burnei, and Sabah. The Chimpanzee's habitat is in the forest in  Africa. They live in family groups, with a dominant male and several females and their young. At times, a number of families can band together temporarily into a tribe. Orangutans are at the San Diego Zoo. The largest of the great apes, the gorilla is among our most endangered species.
